Bang Bang Music Review

Rating: ★ ★ ★ 1/2
Vishal-Shekhar and youth-friendly-vibrant romantic/dance numbers are synonymous to each other and they have justified it time and again from the past one and a half decade. 2014 has been a quiet year so far with only ‘Hasee Toh Phasee' to their name which won hearts and accolades with some soulful numbers..Siddharth Raj Anand (Director) has always been consistent with V-S for all his directorial ventures and their combination has resulted in some chartbuster numbers.."Bang Bang" rides high on expectations with Hrithik Roshan-Katrina Kaif in the lead pair that has created a certain buzz around it, with four originals and one trademark Shekhar Ravjiani reprise version, let's go for a ride!

Techno arrangements with the trademark V-S "thump" add to that some dazzling screen presence of Hrithik.."Tu Meri" is insanely catchy with Vishal Dadlani's vociferous vocals and some ordinary lyrics. The composition embarks a lot of power but ends too soon and keeps one wanting for more, the choreography is sparkling and adds a lot of mass appeal to the composition. One word- Chartbuster!

The vocals of Ash King is like a breath of fresh air where now-a-days almost every soulful number has Arijit Singh written over it.."Meherbaan" is the highlight of the soundtrack and is addictive right from the first note and shifts gears during the five minutes of its duration. Shilpa Rao starts off smoothly but it's Ash King with his elegant charming voice that takes the composition to an altogether different stature, add to that Shekhar's Punjabi tadka from 1.09 to 1.27 and Anvita Dutt Guptan (lyricist) poetic fairy tale imagination..Mesmerising! Remember 'Bin Tere - Reprise' from 'I Hate Luv Storys' back in 2010 where Shekhar Ravjiani swept the listeners off their feet.."Meherbaan Reprise" rephrase the same feeling and cast a spell on the listeners, what with some extraordinary acoustic guitar arrangements (Sanjoy Das and Keba Jeremiah) and magical vocals of Shekhar who brings in his own style which makes it very different from the original number..Keep this one of Repeat Mode! Gorgeous.

Up next "Uff" gives a déjà-vu feeling of many V-S previous compositions and sounds more of a rehash version, the amazing part here is the female vocalist Harshdeep Kaur, best known for her Sufi renditions who sounds amazingly beautiful and adds a certain element of cuteness in the composition, Benny Dayal is usual with his short part. There is a mix of Western and Desi arrangements with some guitar, harmonium, keyboards, piano and many more, notice the drums part towards the end. The lyric by Anvita Dutt are innovative, matches the frequency of today's generation and connects instantly. It's nothing what we haven't heard from the stable of V-S before but still it has the potential to grow post the movie release.

The retro-disco arrangements at the very onset develops curiosity and adds a certain zing to the title track "Bang Bang" which has in it to become a rage once the video is unleashed with the charismatic 'Michael Jackson' aka Hrithik Roshan, one will get to know why I referred Michael Jackson here once the video is online. Benny Dayal voice is tailor made for such genre and Neeti Mohan surprises with her low-techno notes though the song completely belongs to Benny, the hook line 'Bang Bang' is addictive and the extended last minute sees some classy arrangements; make no mistake this is going to be one crazy eye catchy dance number. Boom!

"Bang Bang" lives up to the expectations and delivers what V-S are known for, although we are offered nothing much new in terms of melodies and arrangements, still all the compositions have a satisfactory outcome. 'Meherbaan' stands out and is the one to enjoy a certain shelf life, both the versions. Go..Grab a copy right away!

Ek Villain Music Review

Rating: ★ ★ ★
Expectations takes a roller coaster ride when the musicians and Director of the musical blockbuster "Aashiqui 2" joins in again for "Ek Villain" (under Balaji Motion Pictures) which has some good buzz around it courtesy some mysterious looking promo's. Ankit Tiwari and Mithoon who swept the listeners off their feet with 'Sun Raha Hai Na Tu' and 'Tum Hi Ho' respectively are ready to storm the nation once again, more-so over as the Director Mohit Suri has always been related to 'Hit' melodious numbers. Let's dwell inside straightaway!

Ankit Tiwari (composer and singer) starts off magically with "Galliyan" which has in it to be the song of 2014 as of now. It starts off on an unplugged note and suddenly Electric Guitar riffs takes centre stage with some soft orchestra, the song shifts gears towards the latter part where the flute and violin develops a 'WoW' factor. Ankit Tiwari with his vocals creates a soothing aura beautifully interwoven alongside Manoj Muntashir lyrics, keep this one on loop! An unplugged version is always a treat for music lovers; "Galliyan Unplugged" is a surprise package which tests the singing talent of the lead actress Shraddha Kapoor. The acoustic Guitar alongside the mesmerizing piano is magical and words fall short when Shraddha oozes emotions and pathos with each word and melts your heart, what with soft drum beats and violin during the second half where Ankit Tiwari joins in and takes this version to an altogether different stature and leaves the listeners in trance..Take a bow Ankit!

Mithoon's "Banjaara" is very reminiscent of the composers trademark unplugged style (and his previous compositions recently) where vocals and lyrics takes centre stage with soft/minimum orchestra, don't miss out on the harmonium in the first interlude. Mohd.Irfan who is well known for 'Phir Mohabbat' (Murder 2) and more recently 'Dard Dilo Ke' (The Xpose), weaves magic around Mithoon's lyrics that flows like poetry and touches the soul. Close to six minutes, it certainly demands few hearings and is easily one of the best compositions to come out of Mithoon's stable lately. Masterpiece!

Mohit Suri has a certain liking for sad-heartbreak themes and he makes his presence felt with "Zaroorat" which seems to be straight out of 'Vishesh Films'. Composed and written by Mithoon, it has a dark theme where the protagonist is yearning for his beloved and the flamboyant use of electric guitar and orchestra with some intense lyrics (especially the second paragraph) makes this one so different from the various other compositions of the same genre. The voice of 'Pain and Heartbreak' Mustafa Zahid makes one feel the pain with his renditions, although it will take a while to develop a liking for this one which will be more popular post the movie release.

Up next "Awari" by 'Soch' (Pakistani Band) is a musical extravaganza and the five minutes makes one wanting for more, although this being an adaptation of their very own Nescafe Basement song by the same name, the major difference here is the inclusion of a fabulous female voice Momina Mustehsan who brings extreme calmness and zeal to this intense composition, especially in the low notes..Gorgeous. The male vocalist Adnan Dhool strikes gold and is eccentric in the high pitched notes. The composition has an intoxicating effect instantly and is a perfect blend of soft rock and Sufi, a forte which is still untapped in Bollywood. For the arrangements, one can hear Guitar riffs in the background, a bit of Sitar in the first interlude and a lot of drums after three minutes. The song is to be picturised on Prachi Desai and should be a really interesting one..It’s certainly the Highlight of the soundtrack...a real Gem!

A simple mellifluous melody alongside Guitar strums with some heart-warming, emotional lyrics, add to that the charming vocals of Arijit Singh.."Humdard"; composed and written by Mithoon is a situational number that has very basic arrangements but it's the lyrics and vocals that wins you over. It beautifully describes how the protagonist has found solace in his lover and can go through any pain or any extent if she is around.

To sum up "Ek Villain" lives up to the expectations, Ankit Tiwari, Mithoon along with Soch-The Band makes sure that there is something for each segment of listeners. 'Galliyan', 'Banjaara' and 'Zaroorat' are for the masses where the former has already topped the charts, on the other hand 'Awari' is for the listeners who likes their music to be unconventional and has some thought-provoking lyrics. Love and Romance are the key factors here around which the plot revolves and each song should fit in pretty well alongside the narration. All in all a soundtrack worth your time and money!

Main Tera Hero Music Review

Rating: ★
Music duo of Sajid-Wajid had a very quiet 2013 with about five average soundtracks which failed to make any impact, their last recognized venture was in 2012 with 'Teri Meri Kahaani' and the superhot hit 'Mashallah' in 'Ek Tha Tiger', considering all the facts "Main Tera Hero" comes along with very limited expectations, moreover when the last combination of David Dhawan (Director) and Sajid-Wajid 'Chasme Baddoor' offered nothing on the musical front. On the flip side though, the star cast of Varun Dhawan, Ileana D'Cruz and Nargis Fakhri adds a certain glam quotient which may work in favour for the songs, with four originals and two remix, let's discover what this 'Hero' has in store for us!

"Besharmi Ki Height" lands in the 'Safe Zone' with all those catchy techno arrangements and Kumaar's nonsensical lyrics. Benny Dayal is at his usual best with such genre of songs, Shalmali Kholgade continues to impress and her transformation from the days of 'Pareshan'-Ishaqzaade to 'Balam Pichkari'-YJHD to such fast paced numbers is appreciable. The composition is eye catchy with some good choreography and the sizzling pair of Ileana and Varun Dhawan. It makes a good start for the soundtrack and will be liked by the masses (Urban). DJ Notorious (aptly named for such song) adds some excessive extended techno beats (misses by an inch in becoming a version 2 of 'Subha Hone Na De'-Desi Boyz with those same arrangements) and the result is "Besharmi Ki Height Remix" where everything else remains the same as in original..One wonders if at all a remix required for a club number like this! The remix culture in Bollywood soundtracks popularised with Himesh Reshammiya when he started providing remix of each song in the soundtrack few years back, as of now, the listeners seeks variety, probably a reprise with a change of singers or lyrics will be more acknowledged than the filler remix!

Remember Pancham Da's 'Jahan Teri Nazar Hai, Meri Jaan Mujhe Khabar Hai'..the same rhythm is re-lived in "Palat-Tera Hero Idhar Hai" where Arijit Singh brings on the required notorious charm with his renditions. The orchestra here is really impressive with lots of instruments being used, especially the Guitar and Saxophone for the slow parts throughout and also the Violin notes, Kausar Munir and Danish Sabri writes some fabulous flirtatious lyrics (both the paragraphs). It's an instant HIT material and certainly the best composition of this soundtrack.

Things become Govinda'ish and David Dhawan makes his presence felt with "Shanivaar Raati" (lyrics by Kumaar) where even a voice like Arijit Singh can't save this outdated number from sinking, what with Wajid trying to do a Honey Singh in the first interlude with some Rap portions. The arrangements are sadly Western with a mix of Punjabi that doesn't works, Shalmali Kholgade does well for her portions and at places the song reminds of 'Dilliwaali Girlfriend' from YJHD. One can imagine Govinda and Raveena Tandon dancing on this one, neverthless it has been composed for a comic situation and may look better on screen, Avoid! Further, with overdose of techno arrangements "Shanivaar Raati Remix By DJ Chetas" makes one press 'SKIP' immediately!

The soundtrack takes a downward momentum with "Galat Baat Hai" where the harmonium at the very onset straightaway takes the listeners to 'Second Hand Jawaani' -Agent Vinod and the whole composition seems to be highly inspired by this Pritam number and we always blame Pritam for plagiarism! Anyways, Javed Ali sounds very much like Sonu Nigam and Neeti Mohan is delicious as usual, Kausar Munir and Danish Sabri writes some cheeky lyrics but the composition never really connects and is only to be heard alongside the video with two hot sizzling actress, would be interesting to see how it's being picturised.

Overall, "Main Tera Hero" works in parts where Sajid-Wajid failed to repeat their partnership with David Dhawan (‘Partner’-2007). 'Besharmi Ki Height' and 'Palat ' will be popular where rest two are strictly for the movie and would not even be remembered after the movie ends it tenures at the box office.

Ragini MMS 2 Music Review

Rating: ★ ★ 1/2
A horror movie and good music are never synonymous to each other.."Ragini MMS 2" doesn't brings along huge expectations, moreover when the last outing 'Ragini MMS' offered nothing on the musical front. Surprisingly, four composers have been roped in for four original compositions with a remix and reprise version each. Sunny Leone being the main lead for this sequel, some visual treat is on the cards for sure.

Meet Bros Anjjan kick starts with "Baby Doll" that has in it to be a chartbuster straightaway (I am talking here about the audio alone) even if one ignores the scorching screen presence of Sunny Leone which is shot in a way to gain lots of hooting and holla from its target segment. Debutant Kanika Kapoor strikes gold (pun intended) with her magnetic voice that brings on the required sensuality in this composition; add to that some English and Punjabi rap portions by Meet Brothers and Kunal Avanti with some Urban-Punjabi lyrics by Kumaar. Grab this 'doll' right now! Things becomes more interesting with "Baby Doll Remix" which ups the tempo a few levels with some techno arrangements, what I liked is few changes here and there, the added Rap portions by Meet Brothers at various places, especially the male rendition of the hook line, such changes always provide that extra zing to any remix or reprise.

The over hyped "Chaar Botal Vodka”; composed and sung by Yo Yo Honey Singh; is different from various other compositions that has the name of Yo Yo Honey Singh attached to it. The song as usual caters to the 'Urban Youth' with lyrics by Ustad Bhagdarh Ali Khan Sahab (Really?) that is all about drinking and partying but instead of fast paced techno/club arrangements , Honey Singh focuses more on vocals and Hip Hop rap portions with pulsating trance music in the background for the whole duration of the song..Interesting. Considering the fan following of Yo Yo these days and the 'Sensuous Sunny Leone', it may go on and become a Huge Hit but only for a very limited period!

Composer Pranay Rijia and vocalist Mustafa Zahid (Remember 'Teri Yaadon Se' from 'Blood Money'-2012) brings forth the soulful "Maine Khud Ko" which has some really good arrangements, especially the flute and Sitar renditions. Kumaar is good with his pen but nothing as such which we haven't heard before, also the composition gets a tad too long with a duration of 5 and a half minutes with too much orchestra and very less vocals. Kshitij Tarey replaces Mustafa Zahid for the vocals in "Maine Khud Ko Reprise" which is sadly the same as the original in all aspects, although it sounds better with Kshitij high pitched alaaps and soothing vocals.

Chirantan Bhatt's "Lori Of Death - Soja Mere Chanda" written by Manoj Yadav, fails miserably in entering the 'Horror' territory of a scary, dark number, for instance 'Lautungi Main' from 'Ek Thi Daayan'. Arpita Chakroborty does well for her mysterious vocals but phrases like 'So Ja Warna Daayan Kaat Khayegi' makes one laugh rather than being horrified, may it would make sense in the movie. Avoid at all cost, this one is to be played alongside the narration of the movie only.

Overall, "Ragini MMS 2" is certainly better than its previous part. 'Baby Doll' is an instant hit and 'Chaar Botal Vodka' is strictly for Honey Singh diehard fans, both the songs are part of promotional strategy for increasing the footfalls and succeeds in doing the same!

Bewakoofiyaan Music Review

Rating: ★ ★
"Our songs are never lip synced by gorgeous faces and great actors and actresses, the only way we get heard is by playing our songs Live, hundreds of thousands of times"-Raghu Dixit on winning the "Live Performer of the Year" award at the The Great Indian Music Awards 2014. He composed some good stuff for ‘Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge’ under Y-Films (a youth wing of Yash Raj Films) with Director Nupur Ashthana (Debut), she collaborates with Raghu Dixit for her second project as a director.."Bewakoofiyaan" which brings along some good expectations deviating from the stereotyped love melodious numbers. Ayushmann Khurrana (the lead actor) and Rochak Kohli have one guest composition amongst the six originals (no reprise/remix versions) which generates curiosity as their past two compositions have connected really well with listeners ('Paani Da Rang' and 'Saddi Gali Aaja'). Let's see what these talented artists have in store for us!

"Gulcharrey" straightaway caters to the young listeners with a club/techno feel attached to it, the unusual, carefree and creative lyrics by Anvita Dutt Guptan in tandem with some charismatic diction's by Benny Dayal makes up for a crackling start, Aditi Singh Sharma does a sort of chorus only and her voice goes almost unnoticeable, though the overlapping effect does add that extra zing to this one.

"Khamakhaan"
unfolds like a story/narration with some fabulous Guitar strums and flute arrangements. Neeti Mohan's voice is sweet and has a certain different texture to it; Ayushmann Khurrana is superlative with his part and ups the entertainment quotient. Habib Faisal writes some situational stuff that aptly describes the two characters: A girl who believes in love without caring for anything else and a boy who thinks that money is equally important as love. Certainly, the Best of the lot.

Raghu Dixit is in his elements for the title track "Bewakoofiyaan" where he gets behind the mike and does a creative 'Bewakoo OOO fiyaaann' for the hook line. The arrangements are more inclined towards 'rock' genre with lots of Guitar and Drums, also, the flute renditions are always a treat to hear and especially when played alongside Drums (from 2:47 to 3:20). The lyrics by Anvita Dutt are quite situational and describe the crux of the movie centred on the character of male protagonist Ayushman Khurana. A simple track presented creatively  by Raghu dixit in his own way, expect this one to play multiple times post interval and certainly the one which would grow post the movie release.

It's been long since Mohit Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal came together for a song (probably since the inception of Arijit Singh).."Rumaani Sa" falls short of expectations that one has from these two hugely talented artists. Anvita Guptan writes some romantic stuff (Rumaani Sa means A little romantic) but is let down by the arrangements which makes the overall result a sort of club/dance territory that doesn't have that magical charm, although the second paragraph and the vocals makes the song a good hear.

Led by Guitar and Banjo; "Aye Jigida" has Vishal Dadlani written all over it with his vociferous trademark renditions, what with some eccentric jugalbandi of Violin, Flute and a bit of Harmonium in the second interlude (from 2:15 to 2:48). Anvita Dutt writes some carefree motivational stuff describing about the male protagonist, the hook line 'Aye Jigida Jigida' may sound repetitive for once but it settles down soon and should make pretty much sense in the movie. Overall, a fabulous composition!

Ayushman Khurana and Rochak Kohli's (co-composed and written) romantic number "O Heeriye" (released as a single released last year) has that Indi-Pop flavour along with Punjabi lyrics. It has minimum orchestra, mostly Guitar and Drums, Ayushman does well for the really low pitch renditions at the start and then at the end; the song does catches your attention instantly but as far as comparison goes from the duo's previous two super hit compositions as mentioned above, this one fares pretty average and wouldn't enjoy a shelve life.

"Bewakoofiyan" meets the expectations to an extent with some different tunes led by heavy orchestra/arrangements where the lyrics play a crucial part. All the compositions have a situational appeal and probably the fate of the songs largely depends upon how they are promoted and how well the movie fares at the box office. Overall, a soundtrack that offers something different from the typical Bollywood Masala soundtracks.

Shaadi Ke Side Effects Music Review

Rating: ★ ★ ★ 1/2
Pritam Chakraborty opens 2014 with "Shaadi Ki Side Effects", a sequel to 'Pyar Ke Side Effects' with an unusual and interesting pair of Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan. Some out and out dance numbers with some mellifluous melodies is what one expects from the soundtrack with a huge track list of twelve (12) songs including a remix, few reprise versions and one guest composition by Mikey McCleary. Let's dwell inside straightaway.

"Harrys Not A Brahmachari" starts off nicely with Hinglish rap by Ishq Bector and Jazzy B high pitched renditions but soon suffers from overdose of club/techno arrangements which gives a more of a remix kind of feel, a bit similar in treatment as in Pritam's very own 'I'll Do The Talking (Steal The Night)' from 'Agent Vinod' (2012). Divya Kumar joins in for the only paragraph and does well; Amitabh Bhattacharya lyrics are apt but nothing extraordinary here as compared to what one expects out of him these days. The song may do well in the club/discotheque's for a short period, but it's not the trademark Pritam number by any means. Moving on listeners gets curious seeing "Harrys Not A Brahmachari-The Original Song" (without all the techno arrangements) is more inclined towards the 'Punjabi' flavour with Dhol arrangements which works in the favour of the song. Ishq Bector has an extended rap portion in this one, overall a much better version indeed. Surprisingly "Harrys Not A Brahmachari-Remix By Dj Angel" also finds a place in the soundtrack which is nothing but an amalgamation of the previous two versions with some more techno arrangements, one asks..Was this remix required and even more does this song deserve three versions?

Remember Nikhil Paul George, the gorgeous mischievous voice behind the composition "Main Kya Karoon" from 'Barfi' (2012).."IM Sorry Par Tumse Pyar Ho Gaya" has a very slightly resemblance to that song, fairly because of the same composer and singer. Nikhil's voice is raw and innocent which strikes an instant chord with the listeners, Neeti Mohan and Mili Nair supports well with their parts, what is noticeable here is the way the arrangements are used, from violin to saxophone to harmonica to whistling sounds..Everything sounds so beautiful and lovely. Swanand Kirkire does a fine job with his pen in this groovy number.

Up next "Tauba Main Vyaah Karke Pachtaya"; basically a sequel to the song 'Tauba Main Pyar Karke Pachtaya'; where the focus shifts from after effects of love to marriage this time. It's going to be a hit among the masses in their 30's and will be a must in the ched/chad category of ladies sangeet ceremonies, on the other hand it may not go very well with the married women if they take this one too seriously, just enjoy the fun element. It has some eccentric lyrics by Mayur Puri which creatively throws light on the woes of married men..Take a bow! Alam Lohar starts off with the phrase alongside Hinglish rap by Poorvi Koutish (reality show contestant) where Shahid Mallya does the rest of the job and with aplomb. The arrangements are slow and simple with Dhol and Shehnai, rightly so, as the main highlight here are the lyrics, here is an extract:

'Phantom Choddo, Uski Biwi Chalta Phirta Pain,
Pit Pit ke Hi Neela Padd Gaya Man.
Hai Ghar Mein Aake Jaale Saaf Karta Spider-Man
Hulk Hai Nanga, Kapde Phaade Biwi Din aur Rain.
Hain Madam Ka Tashan,
Main Iska Manmohan...'

For the Punjabi segment we have "Tauba Main Vyaah Karke Pachtaya" where the same Hindi lyrics are converted into Punjabi and Arif Lohar perfectly replaces Shahid Mallya with some added Punjabi arrangements. Overall, a good version if compared to the filler remixes but could have been more innovative with the lyrics part with few changes to add more variety.

Arijit Singh brings on "Desi Romance" which has in it to be a commercial hit instantly. The composition offers a superb fusion of Desi and Western arrangements where debutant Suchi (what a polished voice) starts off with some Desi/Classical renditions alongside Western arrangements..Creative enough; Arijit Singh joins in and bang on.. The song takes a leap into an altogether different levels, what with a heavy interlude of techno/trance arrangements..Gorgeous. Swanand Kirkire does really well especially with the female lyrics which are Desi to the core. Dance to the tune of Desi Romance with your loved ones this season! Chartbuster.

Farhan Akhtar croons "Yahaan Vahaan" which goes almost unplugged with acoustic Guitar strums (and a short harmonica portion in the second interlude). A soulful situational number where Swanand Kirkire describes the state of the mind of the protagonist whose is asking for forgiveness from his beloved after realizing that he is incomplete without her. Farhan Akhtar's husky voice portrays the pain of separation and the song requires just one hearing to get an entry into the favourite playlist of the listeners.

"Yahaan Vahaan-Reprise" shifts gears from Acoustic Guitar to Electric Guitar and Drums moving out of the unplugged zone and is as good as the original. The lyrics and the singer are same where a K.K or any other voice would have lifted the bar sky high, still, both the versions are must hear (depending upon the choice of listeners) and would grow immensely post the movie release.

Mohit Chauhan is in his elements with "Bawla Sa Sapna" where Pritam and Swanand Kirkire (lyrics) almost does a 'Barfi!'(Title Song). A lyrically heavy number with delightful soft orchestra that rides high on Mohit Chauhan mellifluous renditions that have the power to melt hearts straightaway. Need to say more..Don't dare miss this masterpiece! And as one wonders if anyone can match up to the standards of Mohit Chauhan, Pritam brings on a surprise package with "Bawla Sa Sapna-The Children Come To Sing" where a sweet, cute, innocent voice of Diva casts a magical spell and transports the listeners to a dream world where the listeners wants to stay forever. With Piano in the background, notice how elegantly she renders the hook line and some difficult dictions, loved how she pronounced the word 'Sapnu'..ahhh..Delightfully Delicious!

Mikey McCleary guest composition "Ahista Ahista" with lyrics by Ankur Tiwari. The whole three minutes has a sad emotional feel attached to it with very minimum orchestra, Farhan Akhtar's voice would make more sense in the movie and so the song, elsewhere, it ends the soundtrack on a pretty average note.

To conclude, "Shaadi Ke Side Effects" has in it something for every set of listeners; 'Desi Romance’, 'Yahaan Vahaan' (Both Versions) and 'Bawla Sa Sapna' (Both Versions) are certainly the highlight of the soundtrack with some stupendous work from the composer and the lyricist. 'Tauba Main Vyaah Karke Pachtaya' and 'Ahista Ahista' are purely situational numbers that would certainly look good onscreen. Overall, Pritam starts off 2014 in style!
